Not the absence of sound, the absence of noise

The explanation really goes all the way to silence. When we can speak in silence, you can hear not just my words, but you can hear my tone, what I mean even beyond the words. In fact, it’s really not the words that are important. It’s the tone. It’s the overall message, the context. When we’re in a noisy place in urban environments, we become isolated and we exhibit antisocial behavior because we are cut off from a level of intimacy with each other and we’re less in touch. We’re busy not listening to this, not seeing that, not doing that. We aren’t opening up and being where we are.


Our bodies, our eyes, are entrusted with taking the measure of our often absurd relations with the world we live in, and given that trust, we recognize the folly of it.

Spring has arrived and Kilo an Emmanuel have a dinner at the dome site to welcome it. The smell of spinach and salmon crepes seems to travel through the entire valley and the elders show up just in time to eat.

Overflow seating at the meeting this Monday. Garth says its the first time it’s ever felt like a real community. Different groups report on their individual projects. Covering Nicodemouses house, fixing the yurt, planting in the spring garden.

Welcoming two new members to the group, Pamela asks them for two weeks of silence, to listen and acclimate. Garth asks them to dress less militaristic and adorn themselves with color and sun necklaces. They own guns, which makes everyone a little uncomfortable and sparks a conversation about defense, revenge, us vs. them. No conclusion is met.

Everything seems to come alive and in bloom in the first week of spring including a large rattlesnake who has settled in the rock next to our material pile. She is sweet and quiet so we let her be for the meantime.

We tare out the winter greens from the cold frame and start seedlings.

We continue framing the roof in the top residence and prepare for the concrete slab flooring for the bottom. Steel will be welded from the floor to the extending I-beam for the first half of the cantilevered deck.

It feels like summer has arrived two weeks into spring with temperatures over 100. Nicodemous is back in town and working on camouflaging the community kitchen on the landing.

Peter Shire comes by the site for a visit. He feels the modernist sympathies and says we should leave the exposed walls as-is.

We spend a week building Garth a claw foot tub with a pit for fire underneath. Out initial direction of stone masonry is diverted mid-project. Per Garth’s request we use chicken wire and ferro-cement to house the tub in a boulder like form.

HBI construction promises us left over steel from the new super-Walmart building in town.

We spend a few days in Tijuana looking for a cheaper solution for fabricating steel ledged window frames.

Authority and Community

It’s not even complicated

Is then traded with other properties like this and then there’s an internal commerce that’s backed by real stuff. It’s not backed by debt. It’s not backed by IOU this and that.

It’s backed by real stuff. This is real abundance we have. We’re in a desert facility, you guys are in a desert facility that’s much more tropical and so we can make things that you can’t.

And then I already am setting up the shipping lines between those things. This isn’t a small thing.

So the money comes to me and I do projects as my own corporation that benefit this and are called to me research and testing. I’m paying you guys to use your land so I can go ahead and build your water system so that I can make sure your water system works so I can sell it to the other people right?

And then all of a sudden you guys don’t have any money coming through the land, you’re literally being paid just that little bit of amount right. You have sole proprietorship and you’re way out of the tax loop, you’re way out of the radar of the governments, you’re way out of the radar of any people politically who wouldn’t be interested in what you guys are doing.

You’re protected.

Ya know, that’s the way to do it.

You guys gotta understand, if this is gonna be a place for families and for children and stuff like that, there will be a group of us out there that are actually in the conspiracy, that are at that level of the game, and ah, we’re out to protect.

And we make a buffer around that so that children can play, and so that everybody can find their zone.

If you guys engage in that system then we need to make an invisible barrier between this community and the rest of the world, and each of those communities we do business with will do the same thing, and they’ll be a dozen of them and they’ll trade between each other and the abundance stays within a bigger macro community. Right.

We’re finally gonna change the world.

You need to have a billion dollars behind you to do that right?

but it’s a billion dollars in fake money and all my friends know this.

They all know it’s fake money, cause it’s all digital right?



Nothing is real.

It’s not even backed by paper.

It’s not backed by anything.


Just type it in and…

When the government makes ten million dollars it sends ten million dollars in treasury bonds to the federal reserve and then because of the debt and the interest that they know they’re going to get, they can say that this money is real. Because we know they’re going to get the money back.

They can make 90 million in one 10 billion dollar transaction out of that succession right.

So right now 97 percent of money in the economy is not backed by anything, not even on paper, not even paper the feeling of it.

So we realize now that mathematically that has reached the limits of what it can work any more and it’s gone so far past it that it’s collapsing and they’re scrambling. If we put our attention on that collapse then we will collapse with it.

What we’re doing is a little more robin hood, we take what gold that they have and we plant it here, it grows trees.

The enemy doesn’t see a tree to shoot, they see the one that’s their enemy. We’re playing the same game as them.

So ultimately some of that world is going to collapse into that chaos and it already is. And another part of it won’t because they’re actually smart enough to pay attention to it.

Ya know.

That’s the, this would be the model that would work.

You guys wouldn’t actually raise any money. You guys would be an operation that gets paid to have experiments on your land that happens to be your water, that happens to be your houses and stuff like that.




And these are the folks that are ready to build the new world, whether they like it or not.

And it means non-debt economy. Real economy backed by real actual stuff. Right, that’s one of the first things.

but the first thing is that all of the data all of the science is playing to the spiritual vibe. At the center of any solid community there’s  like the, ah, there’s, well like Garth or there’s the teepee, there’s some kind of place ya know where you meet and you love each other.

And the first energy you create before you dig something out of the ground is love between each other. So you get that going first, and then you dig a well.


We got love and water.


Then we make sure that we have sewage, so that we can then expend that energy. Then the food sources are built all around those things. Right.

It’s nature, It’s not even complicated. It’s simple.

Because ultimately they want it to be a fall back, a fall back position to the whole war of it all. To be able to go and take their women and children to that place.

I like that.

It sounds like Garth, that you’re not born ahead of your time, that the times are catching up with you.

OK, good. So I don’t have to make out a budget?


What you do need to do is give me a list of exactly what you are intending, right.

Your ultimate intentions have to be spelled out very clearly. That’s not a budget, that’s not how to do it. That’s what it is.

That’s, what does it feel like first? Maybe what does it look like to a certain degree, but it’s really going to be like what at the corset desire of the community, what are the things that, we already know the basics, you know, you know we need the things to survive.


What does your heart say?

What is that spot that you see in the future that everyone is in that place of real harmony, real joy, it actually works.

And how do you feel at that moment?

Suck that into now, and feel that moment and describe it to me.

That gives me the creative vision I can then turn that into marketing lingo and that enrolls the concentric circles of creators, protectors, and ultimately fans of the community.

You kind of get to feeling you know, what is this place meant to feel like?

What’s the song?

What’s the mood?

And then I write lyrics on that mood right.

So, the bed.

The jam bed.

That is something that Garth has been sitting on for thirty years, that’s why he needed to be that ahead of his time. He’s gotta know that feeling so deeply, thirty years in that he inspires me and other people to write about that feeling right.

What that is, and that causes into creation, because words are used, logos, becomes conversation. Becomes the perceptual reality of other people. And they start wanting to participate in becoming tangible realities and their perceptions are deepened.

Eventually a million people want this community to be exactly what you want it to be, but in the meantime that’s what this is.

Definitely, maybe

More snows have come and gone. The site was covered in 4 inches one morning, but it never really sticks around past the afternoon besides some shadowy enclaves scattered around the property. Covering and un-covering the exposed wood of the roof and remaining skeleton seems to take up most of the days in the past few weeks.

A wake of two to three hundred turkey vultures fly by over head, quite low, and drift through the valleys migrating north. A nice break from the recent fly-bys of what we believe to be the local sheriffs helicopter that have become more frequent in the past months. Emanuel assures us to not become paranoid. This seems like good advice as the helicopter passes by again, back and forth, close enough to make out our lunch on the back deck.

We set two cement footings for the main structural beams supporting the roof on the top residence and prepare the back deck of the bottom residence for the cement slab. Silicone and expanding foam are used to seal the wood to the rock. The boulders expand and contract, just slightly, from day to night, and the sealant accounts for this elasticity.

Moses’s four boys, from 7-12, are staying on the property for a while. They bring an incredible energy and everyone seems to be gelling cohesively for the moment. They spend the day studying wtih Marie, working a bit with Garth in the gardens, and watching 80’s flashback films in the teepee.

Solar Man Dan arrives to mend our solar set-up, as it’s been inoperable since mid-Dec after an arc in the converter shut it down. The system is back up and running in an hour and the batteries have survived a cold, inactive winter in the cave. This lifts morale, Solar Man Dan talks about equalization.

At what first glance looks like someone has cleaned the sunroof window installed in the top loft, turns out to be there is no window at all. Which we find down in the rocks 20 feet down in the caves. Although this proves a good test for the stability of tempered and laminated glass, we learn a costly lesson in wind dynamics. Solar Man Dan explains.


And central to problem posing education was something Paolo Freire called dialog, how did he define or describe dialog?

So dialog, interestingly enough, is not simply a way of talking, or a way of having conversation, like taking turns for example. Many people think that dialog implies that you all sit in a circle and everyone has an equal share of the air time or something like that. But for Freire dialog was actually a form of action. A form of reflective action. And of course language is an important part of it because language is very deeply connected to our human capacity to understand ourselves and the world. And so dialog is a way of engaging in discursive practices in language that is tied to action. And that is tied to reflection upon that action, so that we become conscious actors using that language as a tool to transform ourselves and to transform the world.

On staying still and moving along

I am facing backwards, being thrown forward, fixed. The smaller, closer details are just whipping blurs, but the red mountains and the black factories. The power lines stretching over the under-used farms: They stand still long enough.
The ocean is something else entirely.
I’ve been on trains most days this week, again today. I’m going to the south, to Calabria, to the instep of the boot, to a minor city on the coast. There I’ll be by the water to eat fish and hot peppers, go up in the mountains, go down between the monolithic concrete pillars that support the autostrade soaring stuck above. As with much of my time away from whatever’s home at the time, the occasion for my going is a person I just met, a near-stranger who says, I want to show you this place I’m from, I want to show you all that is here as opposed to elsewhere. And I’m learning quickly to never say no to this, to become more iron and less intending flesh, more susceptible to magnets of hospitality and not knowing, of contingent encounters that have nothing to do with what we plan or don’t plan to do.

Desire is the petty show of resistance we put up in the face of plans made for us, curving tracks on which we are yanked ahead…

Dynamic Harmony

If he doesn’t choose.

He’s the kind, it’s growing into yourself. He’s the kind it can happen too. He’s got so much data, so much information. He’s like a library all that knowledge just sitting there, going to waste. So this isn’t a dump.

So it’s up to him, but personally I don’t want to put up with him, and he is feeling this reception is unpleasant.

Because part of it is hearing it and speaking it, you know I talk a lot in the bus, I was accused of being a lunatic because of it. And you know your half right, I’m a happy lunatic. But to speak it out in front of others who feel, you have spiritual intelligence. So you understand. It works just by that telepathically.

But that’s tenderizing him for this next stage, of silence and listening. You know it’s vital that people, if there’s a requirement to living here, it’s bring your best with you. You know when Garth told me about the stone carving that he had seen of Moses, that I haven’t seen yet, he was drooling with praise, how skilled, how detailed, how beautiful, and that thrills Garth.

So to have somebody come who is already humble, so we can be true elitists.

You know, anything is possible, and thoughts are more potent than any weapon. I just turn myself over, there’s a way to deal with it. I don’t know what is is, but I know there is , there is.


You don’t  think it’s possible to be healed?

In the etheric realm. I mean there’s seven realms, or thirteen, I’ve heard many numbers I don’t know, but atomic radiation is very heavy, very damaging. To me, it’s kind of like reverse laser. Laser can be benign, but atomic radiation is note benign.

Active Forms

Avoiding some modern habits that shape the projects of Price and Alexander, another kind of artistic endeavor, not reliant on either the digital prosthetic or the predictable cybernetic system, can address this new global infrastructure space. This is not a new but an extra art and mode of making in which the action is the form. Action is not necessarily movement but is rather embodied in relationship, relative position and potential in organizations. Action is immanent in the disposition of an organization. There is no prescription for architecture, only a technique for performing it. Active forms design a disposition—a set of capacities for shaping space over time. Active forms are forms for handling forms.

Thinning out

After a really mild December, winter is now in full swing and taking its toll on productivity. Three days of rain the last week of December stalled work and we were forced to wrap the exposed decks with tarps. Below freezing temperatures has now turned the rain to snow and 30mph winds blaze through the caves and feel like a swarm of bee stings on any exposed skin.

We are visited by a couple from nearby with a newborn, they have interest in becoming involved with the land and land trust. They are tall, good looking, and eat only raw food. They are looking to start a religious organization, and have settled on a name, bylaws, and diet, which feels a bit cultish, but Garth asked what isn’t a cult?

Ariana arrives in the middle of the night and interrupts a screening in the teepee of Radical Attitudes, the Architecture of Douglas Cardinal. Her keys are locked in a Saab down below, with the car running, a dog, two cats, and two rabbits trapped inside. They share the full reign of car, so breaking the window is not an option. Steve is able to open the lock with a wire.

We have a group meeting in the teepee the next morning.


The land has thinned out in the past month as most guests have retreated elsewhere as the temperature dropped. This with the exception of Moses and friend. They arrived in a large RV and are now parked down below on the landing. Moses is from a family of healers from Egypt near the Sphinx. After his family became popular for their services the government grew suspicious and they are now exiled to the states. He is looking for somewhere to bring the family and continue practicing.

Moses has been training one of the donkeys and built a beautiful saddle and carriage. He yells out loud in deep voice, Mush, and a few other words which i believe are egyptian. His first time riding in the carriage the donkey took off at full speed and headed for the boulders. Just when he thought he would have to dive from the carriage they hit a bush and were slowed by the entanglement.

We adobe the first exterior coat on the top loft of the upper building. Not sure how this will hold in the weather, as there is currently snow covering the property. We leave for the weekend to LA in a blizzard.

Heavy Forms

At the very beginning of my conscious life, in my efforts to obtain and grasp the solidity to which my innate demand for plentitude impelled me, I tried above all to the capture the essence of matter by looking for it in it’s most closely defined and concentrated and heaviest forms. Then it was that my newly born attraction to the world of rocks began to produce the beginning of what was to be a permanent broadening of the foundations of my interior life. The truth is I’ve never been able to feel at home, even at the peak of my spiritual trajectory, unless immersed in an ocean of matter.

Sensing Things

A building has to be able to stand so you can’t do entirely without rational thinking. Weights, structures, joints have to work, that’s obvious. But rationalism isn’t an absolute, you have to see rationalism within a larger context. No one is against rationalism, no one denies it, and there is no substitute for it either. But you do have to be aware of the coordinates that connect the rational element with the broader horizon, with life itself. With corruption, destruction, death, birth, whatever. With the rain that suddenly falls that nobody expected.


We wouldn’t of been able to have windows at that angle.

Then also avoiding one big huge span.

It’s just eighteen feet by twelve feet.

Same idea as the back, there’s this flat rock and then a little flat thing here.

So the front will have the same effect with these plateaued embankments.

Well, you know all I can say is that I’m just going to have to trust you and if in the end if we’re totally horrified we’ll just have to take it apart and push it in the rocks and try again.

Well, I think I’ve been pretty clear, that I don’t like to see straight lines, or stuff that doesn’t occur naturally, parallel lines, when I was doing Frank Lloyd Wright I liked parallel lines ones going back and forth.

What about angular lines.

Well you know.


I think for us its thinking about these other styles of rock formations where straight lines and the round intersect.

Yeah, that’s what we’re interested in too.

I don’t think that’s the issue.

Make that happen and we’ll all be on the same page, try not to make it look like Disneyland.

That’s the thing.

Wright felt very strongly about the connection to the desert. He said: “Arizona needs its own architecture… Arizona’s long, low, sweeping lines, uptilting planes. Surface patterned after such abstraction in line and color as find “realism” in the patterns of the rattlesnake, the Gila monster, thechameleon, and the saguaro, cholla or staghorn – or is it the other way around—are inspiration enough.”

Plans, Façades

We arrive up top at Garths to present a revised drawing. We show Garth the drawing traced from a 3d model of sketchup. The drawing shows a 3/4 view of the two houses. This drawing represents a shift in direction from the initially proposed arched rebar form on the upper house, and a finished squared-off back to the lower house. The front of the upper house is now imagined with a series of two steps between the top loft and the ground in front. The front wall will continue along the same proposed wavy perimeter of the rebar dome except instead of rounding all the way to second story the there’s an added step half way up, where the roof flattens off for 3 feet. This will enable planter beds for succulents at the two different levels and allow for skylights to sit along horizontal planes.

Garth’s main concern with building projects on the property is keeping them hidden and in harmony with the natural landscape. This is most generally expressed as a wish to mimic the forms of boulders.

Garth has always expressed an extreme distaste for geometrically rigid architecture. Neighbors have approached him in the past to get advice on their building projects to which he has redesigned each and rounded off any straight angle or edge. The architect, a neighbor nearby who frequents the property, recently finished a house with a zip zag roof adjacent to Garth’s, he ignored Garth’s idea to round off the roof. Driving with Garth through the valley he recalls all the neighbors who have received advice and ignored the ideas. He expresses disdain for the appalling Sante Fe knock off’s with pho stepped roof facades.

  • They told us not to bring tents

Garth is upset about the change of plans. He says it’s beyond ugly, and looks like something out of a magazine. He takes a pencil and draws rock shape facades over the squared off surfaces. Some of these extending over the edge of the roof like stage props. We debate the principles of mimicry and harmony in nature. We talk about Garth’s teepee and it’s shape in relation to the valley. We think about ways to texture the exterior walls with different rock facades.

We return to our site a bit deflated but discuss some potential compromises.

A change in our awareness of parts and whole

Architecture, as I have come to know it, is the art of building, and if it communicates any message of significance, it does so through construction. Construction not just in the sense of building, not just as a practical necessity, but in the way that we see it, the way we understand it as a manifestation of science, as an object to which we intuitively respond, as a part in a history that we know. I believe that architecture communicates many things, but it does not do so, or does not do so well, by mere association.

Insofar as it communicates an idea about place, it does so through an understanding of scale. Insofar as architecture communicates spirituality, it does so through weight. Insofar as it communicates an idea about society, it does so through joints. Insofar as it suggests something from beyond, something different from, even something contradictory from it’s own reality, it does so using it’s own construction as a point of departure.

On one of the slides from our first visit to four corners country, there in a building. That was not why we took that shot; the intention was to photograph “Phone Booth Mesa” (more properly “Chimney Rock,” but every fifth outcrop in the Southwest seems to be called that!) on the way up from Shiprock to Cortez. Neither of us remembers seeing any buildings in the foreground of that view; but there it is: one standard, off-the-peg, industrially-produced Butler building with an air conditioner unit on it’s flatly pitched roof. It is finished in an inoffensive tan color, but that doesn’t make it any less outstandingly visible against the background of sagebrush. Why then does the eye of memory not see it? It must be that it is such a usual building in a landscape where only the exotic or the outrageous in architecture tends to look at home and be remembered.

See the watermelon is similar to the cucumber on the interior.

I’ve read many things about the healing effects of watermelon rinds. This whole area here, to juice this is super high in chlorophyl. The skin itself is packed with chlorophyl. You can juice it, you can drink it. Just because when they pickle it like that, it’s a sign that they know.

Watching the sunrise at the landing out front of the burm, waiting patiently for Brian the welder to return today for the installment of the three steel beams, as there was a consensus last night to stop where we were at and return early.

The next morning the welders return and the four of us including Aaron, lift the first beam into place and tack it on. A bit easier in the light of day. The welding continues all day and into the night.

So that particular raw oil form, it doesn’t naturally occur?

I think it naturally occurs, hydrocarbons are formed, you know deep within the earth. I believe there’s natural fission reactors in the crust of the earth, maybe hundreds of them, small reactors, and those neutron sources can transmute things, and I believe they’re messing with the elements, combining things in a way, into what we call hydrocarbons. I think there’s nuclear processes that are generating that and other stuff.

So that heats the air and all that. Well, what’s making the ocean hotter? They’re not going back to that. I think it’s probably a series one or fission reactor cycling the power level and heating up the ocean. Maybe not directly, but through subterranean passages heating it indirectly.

It’s cyclical.

So El Nino is a 4 year cycle, so it’s something else.

Well, that’s a deep subject

Within moments of arriving on site, Manifest, wearing a furry thong, bedouin boots, a tiny leather vest, and conical sedge hat, is in the back seat of my car with his new baby pigmy goat named Dada. Bins of vegetables piled on my roof from Shiloka’s recent bounty in LA and a giant watermelon in my lap for today’s chicken duty snack. Manifest and Josiah are back on site post-burn and have invited guests from the Bahkti fest at Mental Physics. Bliss, an incredibly sweet and positive woman living in a blue motorhome is now parked next to Shiloka’s painted bus caravan of himself, a partner who deals in rare asian antique furniture, and a few dogs.

Shiloka works with tinctures, and brings a pure white sage and lavender to Garths, a drop of each on the wrist, then a rub to your third eye and the back of your neck. A few girls from London are staying with Josiah and cook raw chocolate pudding with chia, raw coco, some kind of leaf, and stevia from their stevia farm back home.

We run into David the oracle at his Starbucks post, he is leaving soon and will be missed.

  • A quiet disconnectedness

We are stalled out on site, waiting to hear back from the welders. To their advice we purchased 8 12″x12″ 1/2″ steel plates which will get bolted into the rock with 3/4″ all-thread in each corner. We will then weld the i-beams into place on the plates. Barr lumber is still going out of business and we bargain with Kyle the liquidator to get 3 of their lumber racking beams.

Andrew pays us a visit, who is a character actor and solar electrician in the area, whose voice booms through the valley as he talks us through the entire wiring system in 5 mins. He considers our situation “primitive” and decides he is too busy at the moment to take on new work. We are still in doubt that we can wire the system ourselves. He may be able to help in a few weeks. Meanwhile the panels sit on the rock and collect sun with no output.

It’s Hard to Find a Good Lamp

I am often asked if the furniture is art, since almost ten years ago some artists made art that was also furniture. The furniture is furniture and is only art in that architecture, ceramics, textiles and many things are art. We try to keep the furniture out of art galleries to avoid this confusion, which is far from my thinking. And also to avoid the consequent inflation of the price. I am often told that the furniture is not comfortable, and in that not functional. The source of the question is in the overstuffed bourgeois Victorian furniture, which as I said, never ceased. The furniture is comfortable to me. Rather than making a chair to sleep in or a machine to live it, it is better to make a bed. A straight chair is best for eating or writing. The third position is standing.

And so then a little hole wold be around one of those pedals, and as that moves as the movie proceeds, it comes outward, concentric circles, and it’s not a linear path, the change doesn’t happen linear, it happens concentrically.


It comes from the middle and comes from the outside in.

The great outdoors

We return to the site after two days in town working on the rig for the solar. We run into Rabbit at Home Depot, he says Don chased the mother bear and its two cubs away and fired warning shots. She chased him back down the hill and he retreaded.

We arrive to the caves and our site has been trashed. Terrorized. Everything is smashed, leaking, eaten. The cooler is emptied, every bin is torn open, jar lids are open and bulk foods line the cave floor. The tool bin is ripped open and a hole poked through an oil bottle leaked oil all through out the tools. Our library box is full of cayenne pepper and trail mix and our books scattered among the mud and food. Sternberg Press’ The Nightmare of Participation has two bites through it, Annie Albers: On Design is doused in olive oil and quinoa, and pages are torn out of Graphic Design History in the Writing (1983-2011). A claw hole through our first line of defense, the air horn, is the final insult.

Seems like it was just the two cubs. There are paw prints across one of our mattresses in the cave, they are smaller, cub size.

Morale is low.

We talk to Garth about the bears. Supposedly bears have become more active in the area in the last few years. They come down from Big Bear looking for food and water. Growing population and environmental changes push them further south every year. Our new neighbor Scott Pinkmountain said a trailer nearby was terrorized last week. The previous tenants walked in a bear in their kitchen, sitting on her hind legs with a jar of sugar in hand.

We spend the rest if the day cleaning the mess and counting our losses. A baby scorpion is seen gathering Chia pellets under the solar batteries, which were fortunately spared. We decide to sleep down in Nicks house for a few weeks.

Brian and Patrick the local welders come by to survey the site for the 2nd level support beams. We’ll need help Welding these to the rock. They are optimistic.

Quasi-vegan afro futurist

Quasi-vegan afro futurist was the last thing I heard before leaving L.A. on the way back to the desert. Almost a month away for summer travel, New York, Massachusetts, Montreal, Sturgis, Salt Lake City, et al.

First things first. A 90 degree turn for Garths large storage fridge that hasn’t cooled anything for years. Organizing canned goods feels like the right logical progression after lifting a 300 pound cement sink into place. Sean “Manifest”(there are too many Seans in the world), has really taken a hold up top and seems to have filled the power vacuum left in Nick’s wake. He has been kind and bossy so far but seems to mean well.

We spend the morning helping with the kitchen and then return to the site. Decision is made we’d be more productive making a to-do list at the saloon. We run into Ted Quinn, Andrea and friends, and watch the local open mic night.

A momma bear and cubs were recently spotted on the property, and smashed up our closest neighbors Emanuel and Kilos’ camp. We sleep up top in Josiah’s rock since he’s still away for the summer. It’s stuffy; we talk about ventilation and pivoting windows.

The next morning we feel inspired and give a much needed redesign to our own temporary kitchen in the caves. Space and level ground are limited so this takes most of the day but we are rewarded with ease of use and falafels. Some scrap wood from the junk pile makes a nice two-tiered shelf and a slab of granite, the perfect counter top. A cinder block and wood shelf to hold the bulk jars reminds us to think about Enzo Mari. C’est la vie to the days of bins, and living in fear of the ominous critter. Mice, lizards, snake, bear: the kitchen is now open.

In the morning we clear dead cactus from the upper area, and Manifest shows us his Bedouin tent compound, boasting various tapestry hangings,  half a sword, an inch-long splinter he once had, and wings from a dead owl he found on the side of the road preserved with sage in a pelican box. Webs, networks, the ‘burn’, global communities, and how technology is continually squandered by corporate interest.

We pack sandbags the rest of the day back at our site.

Al (the nomad)

Some of it is brand new and never been aboard, all right, so you gotta find a place for it.

Well, there’s only a certain amount you can fit in there.

I used to think so, I’ve been living in that place for 33 years, and uh, overtime I stop I get more stuff.

Do you try and narrow yourself down to the least amount of things needed to survive?

Yeah, I’ve tried, I haven’t succeeded very well.

Where do you live the other 4 or 5 places a year?

Well, I spend most of the winter down in Salt Lake city, Some of it in Quartsite…

Then in the Summer time I go uphill and or North..uh, depending on how far north. Last summer I went up to Bellingham Washington, and then most of the summer in Southern Oregon. but I don’t know what I’m doing this summer.

It’s been about 42 years.

What was the reason for living nomadically in the first place?

Well, ah, buying a piece of land just didn’t seem like a viable position.

Cause the government can always come and take it away from you. They’ve gotta give you a little notice, but the government can come and take away your land at any moment. For any reason or another reason.

They could do the same with the trailer right?

Well, they gotta find me. A piece of land you can’t move, they know right where it is, and you’ve got to pay taxes on it every year, of course you gotta pay taxes on a vehicle too, but if you don’t like the taxes where you happen to be, with a piece of land it’s just tough shit, with a truck you can just go somewhere else.

Do you ever miss having a home?

I have a home, it travels.

Uh, At times I get…It was a little worrisome in the first couple of years, but now I only get nervous when the truck doesn’t work right. When I’ve got some reason that I can’t get the truck up and moving, then I get real nervous.

Do you run on solar?

No way you can store enough power to run that vehicle. Even with the best small car you can only go 100 miles. You just can’t store enough to go very far. Now if somebody gets hydrogen really viable, then that might be a way to store enough power. You know you can turn water into hydrogen, but hydrogen is hard to store. You know you see gases in these steel cylinders, well hydrogen will leak through the steal. Hydrogen just can’t be stored economically.

Does it need to be used immediately?

Well, not immediately, but like I said it will leak out of the steel of a cylinder, and the only way you can store it is under high pressure.

There are some kinds of compounds that you can store Hydrogen in without the pressure but I don’t know anything about that, and I don’t think they are viable options yet. if they were we’d be using it. But ah…

Can you work out on the road?

Work? Quit cursing around me.


How do you make money to keep running?

Well, I get a little bit of money from social security, and I have a little bit of money from a stock portfolio that Momma left me when she passed on. Up until that I ah, most recent thing I did was manicure pot. And I made pipes and did carpentry work and just about anything that came along.

But you have to stop to work?

(It fell in the water dish)

Well I don’t actually spend much time traveling, probably not more than 5 or 6 days a year traveling. If I get tired of the scenery, I just got find some more wallpaper. Traveling is too expensive these days with gas what it is. Garth, your half and half is in the freezer. It got a little warm in the car, so I stuck it in the freezer to give it a quick chill.

Well it’s been a lot quieter since we moved all those roosters.

By the spring?

Well they probably won’t last long unless we get them some shelter.


Loose Ground

A day in town to collect containers, tools, smoothies, etc. Not sure what awaits at Garth’s. The trailer off the 62 is sold and the old guy has a brand new line up, shined and price to roll out the door. Someone else’s black mold. It’s 104 degrees, the heat from the open windows feels like  waves of electric blankets. Hit by a cannonball. The summer heat wave begins.

Red Red and Krissy are in town from Montreal for the next few days. This week: leveling and grading both floors, building up the back retaining wall on the lower house, drilling holes and testing the steel supports, sneaking frequent swims at Mentalphysics, setting up the temporary office and kitchen in the caves, digging, grunting, farting. Had to call the bank to authorize the charge from Backwoods Solar, 1000 kilowatts on its way to Fontana, for pick up and install next week. Stop to send Jon PDF’s from Natural Sisters.

First night up top in the rocks. Found half of a steel barrel in a cave down from the site which someone welded a cross beam too at some point. The end of the world does not have to necessarily be apocalyptic and reveal the truth of human existence. Rather, we know life as non-teleological, as having no unifying divine or historical plan that we could contemplate and upon which we could rely. Indeed, we know ourselves to be involved in an uncontrollable play of material forces that makes every action contingent. We watch the permanent change of fashions. We watch the irreversible advance of technology that eventually makes any experience obsolete. Thus we are called, continually, to abandon our skills, our knowledge, and our plans for being out of date. Whatever we see, we expect its disappearance sooner rather than later. Whatever we plan to do today, we expect to change tomorrow.

So far, the best evidence that something has really changed is of this kind. Imagine you were walking around your own familiar neighborhood with some young, clever guy. The Shock of the New

Shock of the New is a 1980 documentary series by Robert Hughes that was broadcast by the BBC in the United Kingdom and by PBS in the United States. It addressed the development of modern art since the Impressionists and was accompanied by a book of the same name; its combination of insight, wit and accessibility are still widely praised.  The eight programmes focused on these themes:

America always gives me the feeling of real asceticism. Culture, politics – and sexuality too – are seen  exclusively in terms of the desert, which here assumes the status of a primal scene. Everything disappears before that desert vision. Even the body, by an ensuing effect of undernourishment, takes on a transparent form, a lightness near to complete disappearance. Everything around me suffers this same desertification. Some days ago you emailed to me a transcript of an address that Slavoj Zizek gave to the Wall St protesters about the worth and justification for changing our social and government systems and what follows is my commentary on these protests and his viewpoint. Perhaps it is a “blog”? Whilst the protests have become world wide they are quickly running out of steam because they lack the credibility of a solution, a policy, or a goal other than the vague notion that the system has to be changed—-but for what? The rantings of Slavoj Zizek are just that, rabel rousing, when what is needed is a well thought out road map, a manifesto, for change and regulation of the imperfect system that we have. To call for a whole change of our system of government i.e. to dump our democratic capitalist system would be gross folly unless you have a workable and socially just alternative. We know that Russian and Chinese communist/socialist systems become totalitarian and repressive party dictatorships so we have yet to find a better fairer workable system—perhaps the Scandinavian countries with their blending of capitalism and socialism have something to teach us about a better system? Any way the protesters are fortunate to be living in countries that permit freedom of expression and assembly! It is to their credit that they have so far been generally peaceful. There is no doubt that there is justifiably present pent up anger and disappointment with the failings of the present system especially in relation to the failure of the banking system to kerb the greed that gave rise to malpractices and fraud and the consequent recession we continue world wide to endure. There are other contributing ingredients too like: High levels of youth unemployment that means school leavers and graduates are unable to find satisfactory work and become the restless unemployed. A growing disparity of incomes between people at the top and people at the bottom. This is common to all developed western countries so we have an excessively rich strata of a few and an impoverished many with all shades inbetween which is bound to give rise to social discontent. Government cut backs in spending especially on social services, education and health that impact on the majority of any population create  anger.  Everyone has forgotten that our elected governments over borrowed in times of prosperity which we enjoyed and now have to pay back the borrowings e.g. the Greeks! So the cut backs were inevitable, but the further down the economic totem pole you are the more hurt you proportionally suffer. I believe that the growing levels of social injustices will eventually culminate in major political changes to our system for the better. It is an incremental progression achieved in a democratic process which be it imperfect it is peaceful. My point here is evidenced by the social changes achieved over the past century.

In a sense this implies a three-stage encounter that we are ascribing between the practitioner and her world. First, a recognition of the fact that instances of art practices can be seen as contiguous to a ‘neighbourhood’ of marginal practices embodied by the figures of the five transgressors. Secondly, that ‘seeing’ oneself as a practitioner, and understanding the latent potentialities of one’s practice, might also involve listening to the ways in which each of the five transgressive figures encounters the world. Finally, that what one gleans from each instance of transgression can then be integrated into a practice which constitutes itself as an ensemble of attitudes, ways of thinking, doing and embodying (or recuperating) creative agency in a networked world.

Milk crates invariably leave full and return empty. They are part of a loop that, as a continuum of contiguous, melded information units, can remain active forever. If the world stood still, the loop that milk crates sketch out in the city would continue to flow, defying entropy and apocalypse. If one crate exits the loop, due to loss or damage, another simply takes its place. The loop is like a tide cycle or a whirlpool. Its indifference, its inwardness, the silence generated by its centripetal flows, should terrify us. It is monstrous in the way its energy absorbs all forms and meanings. As objects move in this flow, their contours, weights, surfaces, articulations, and inscribed data (date of production, type of plastic, percentages of recycled material, ownership markings) dissolve. It’s as if they move under such pressure that they are rendered liquid-like and incorporated into a perpetual spiral of activity.

History of Downtown Los Angeles’ “Skid Row”

The “Skid Row”1 of Los Angeles is a portion of the area in downtown Los Angeles east of the Financial District and the Historic Downtown Center, partially overlaying the core of the downtown Industrial District. It is generally referred to by the City as part of the “Central City East” area, a fifty-block sector of downtown bounded by Main Street (west), Third Street (north), Alameda Street (east) and Seventh Street (south), although Skid Row’s boundaries are actually somewhat fluid.

Wharton wandered the woods and slopes to commune with nature and find subjects for his paintings. They both read voraciously, with a steady stream of books, magazines and newspapers available at the other end of a morning’s brisk walk to the nearby railroad station village

The idea of Gesamtkunstwerk—a German word for “total art-work”—has long since gone the way of all 19th century Romantic ideals, into the trash-heap of history. It began with the belief that art really mattered in human society, morally and politically. This belief was rooted in the great value the ruling classes had always given to art as a symbol of their wealth and power, but also to its place in religions important to European history. It was only natural, therefore, that at the beginning of the modern age, many believed that newly emerging industrialized democracies, both capitalist and socialist, needed not only their own new forms of art, but also new forms of integrating the arts, as had been done in the great cultures of the past. Architecture, painting, sculpture had indeed been brought together in the important buildings of most ancient civilizations, such as Egyptian and Greek temples, as well as in Medieval cathedrals, Renaissance palaces, and Baroque churches, and were combined there with music and both religious and secular rituals and performances. Total art-works. The most notable modernist attempts to accomplish the same were at the Bauhaus and the Russian Constructivists, though were each defeated by political forces—but that is another story.

Today, art is a commodity separated from itself, so to speak, in order to break it down into salable units. Modernism never found its Gesamtkunstwerk.

At a certain stage of my life, I fervently believed that architecture could sponsor a reunification of the arts, in the service of both public and private life, even though it would have to do so very much against all tendencies and trends. Vestiges of this have remained throughout the succeeding years—in System Wien, for example—but never in such an ambitious and hopeful a form as these drawings. Auf wiedersehen, old friend!

A HOUSE tour is the highlight of a visit with a proud homeowner, but when one drops in to see Derek Diedricksen, who makes playful micro-shelters out of junk, it is less so. Possibly because the temperature up here on a cold winter day is less so, possibly because his square footage is less so.

At about 24 square feet, the Gypsy Junker, made primarily out of shipping pallets, castoff storm windows and a neighbor’s discarded kitchen cabinets, is the largest of Mr. Diedricksen’s backyard structures. The Hickshaw, a sleeper built on a rolling cedar lounge chair (or as Mr. Diedricksen calls it, “a rickshaw for hicks”), is considerably smaller, at 2 1/2 feet wide by 6 1/2 feet deep. The Boxy Lady, two cubes on a long pallet, is the smallest: 4 feet tall at its highest point.

Total Corruption

Let’s be clear: a political generation isn’t just an age group that can be data-mined for a promising trend. It’s a common resolve that things have to change, and that change begins with you, concretely. Somehow, young and not-so-young people from all walks of life need to discover not only the philosophical principles, but also the popular vocabularies, the social contexts, the media, the science, and the aesthetics to articulate a critical, resistant, and constructive ethos that could challenge this total corruption. Which means, not a new conspiracy theory or apocalypse scenario, not a new and probably failed call for protest movements either, but deeper territorial processes of inquiry, formation of collectives and public spaces, experiments in co-education and alternative economies, all at a distance from existing institutions, but with a willingness to form new ones and to push for a transformation in the very idea of what an institution can be (since the existing ones, including the art institutions, are totally corrupt).
